At one level, as a longtime and strong proponent of making voting easier for all Americans who are eligible, I would love to make Election Day a holiday. Far too many working people are hamstrung on Tuesday; they can vote only before or after work, when the lines are especially long and when people whose livelihoods depend on getting to work on time and getting the hourly pay cannot afford to wait for an hour or more. But adding an Election Day holiday is simply too costly… That is why I helped to found Why Tuesday, an organization focused on informing Americans that the tradition of Tuesday Election Days is not writ in stone or in the Constitution, but was chosen to suit a 19th-century agrarian economy. We believe it makes far more sense to move elections to the weekend.

Our Norm Ornstein in Monday’s New York Times. Read the full op-ed here.

Want to join our movement? Sign our petition to the President and Congress to move Election Day to the weekend so everyone can vote.

Why do we vote on Tuesdays? I bet this line would be less ridiculous if we weren’t all trying to do this before work.
@tiboribi on Twitter. We agree. Sign our petition to Congress and the President to move Election Day to the weekend.

You’d think Mitt Romney and Barack Obama would know why we vote on Tuesday. They’re running for president, for Pete’s sake. Well, they have no clue.

When asked why Americans vote on Tuesdays Mitt Romney said “I have no idea. Ha. Ha. Ha.” If you thought President Obama might have a better answer, in 2007 he got it completely wrong. Want to know the answer? You’ll find it here.

Do you own a big business? A small one?
Whatever the size, we hope you’ll join us and GOOD in participating in Take Back Tuesday.
On Election Day, Tuesday November 6th, we’re asking business to support the idea of moving Election Day from Tuesday — whether you want to make it a National Holiday or move it to the weekend — by closing the doors of your business so your workers can celebrate the day by casting their ballots.

We had a debate in class about your bill! We think that the election should be open for several days. Another idea is that it should be a National Holiday where we all are allowed a half to a whole day off. Thanks!

Send us your ideas! We love getting them.

they really should move the vote this year, Halo 4 comes out on nov. 6 and they’ll lose alot of votes to people who would rather do that.
An interesting reason, from a commenter on WhyTuesday.org, to move Election Day from Tuesday to the weekend.

Arkansas and Kentucky take center stage today. No, no. Not in basketball. That was in January. Both states are voting today in primary elections. Why today? Why Tuesday? NO GOOD REASON, people! We swear.

About

We're a nonpartisan and nonprofit group, founded in 2005, dedicated to increasing America's horrible voter turnout by asking a simple question: why do we vote on Tuesday? The answer: absolutely no good reason whatsoever. You'll find a longer and equally infuriating answer in this TED talk.

We hope you'll sign our petition asking the President and Congress to pass The Weekend Voting Act, which would move elections to Saturday & Sunday (duh) so more people can vote.

We also have an old-school website.
