More people waited in line to vote in 2012 than in 2008.
As Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday, this is a continuing problem with our voting system that we need to fix.

This means taking steps to address long lines at polling places - and ensuring that every polling place has an adequate number of voting machines. We must acknowledge that giving our fellow citizens access to the voting booth for longer hours and over additional days will enable more of them to cast their ballots without unduly interfering with the work or family obligations that so many have.

Here’s an idea: sign our petition to Congress and the President for the Weekend Voting Act.

Irony alert.
jacobsoboroff:

So, this sign across from the Tennessee State Capitol about women’s suffrage is pretty ironic since the state has SUPER restrictive voting laws.

Whether you voted for the first time, or waited in line for a very long time… by the way we have to fix that.

Why do we vote on Tuesdays? I bet this line would be less ridiculous if we weren’t all trying to do this before work.
@tiboribi on Twitter. We agree. Sign our petition to Congress and the President to move Election Day to the weekend.

Election Day Eats: Introducing ‘Voting Day’ Apple Pie Bake-Offs - by Lara Rabinovitch

Ask your friends to name their favorite aspect of any holiday and talk will turn to food pretty quickly. So if Election Day were a national holiday, what food would we eat?
Nothing is as American as, well, apple pie, so I propose we mark Election Day by celebrating this quintessential American dish, broadly conceived, in voter-based baking competitions across the country. Think of it was voting with your ballot and palate.

You’d think Mitt Romney and Barack Obama would know why we vote on Tuesday. They’re running for president, for Pete’s sake. Well, they have no clue.

When asked why Americans vote on Tuesdays Mitt Romney said “I have no idea. Ha. Ha. Ha.” If you thought President Obama might have a better answer, in 2007 he got it completely wrong. Want to know the answer? You’ll find it here.

The point is there are 15 states with Tuesday-only voting. If Election Day was tomorrow there would be major problems.

Do you own a big business? A small one?
Whatever the size, we hope you’ll join us and GOOD in participating in Take Back Tuesday.
On Election Day, Tuesday November 6th, we’re asking business to support the idea of moving Election Day from Tuesday — whether you want to make it a National Holiday or move it to the weekend — by closing the doors of your business so your workers can celebrate the day by casting their ballots.

Did you catch us on MSNBC this morning?

jacobsoboroff:

I was on Melissa Harris-Perry on MSNBC for the first time this morning talking about Why Tuesday?, the absurdity of Tuesday voting, and how much I love Ari Melber. Take a look. It was super fun. And if you want to support moving Election Day to the weekend so everyone can vote, sign this petition.

About

We're a nonpartisan and nonprofit group, founded in 2005, dedicated to increasing America's horrible voter turnout by asking a simple question: why do we vote on Tuesday? The answer: absolutely no good reason whatsoever. You'll find a longer and equally infuriating answer in this TED talk.

We hope you'll sign our petition asking the President and Congress to pass The Weekend Voting Act, which would move elections to Saturday & Sunday (duh) so more people can vote.

We also have an old-school website.
